The police and prosecutors in Peru conducted a surprise raid at President Dina Boluarte’s home and the presidential palace early Saturday as part of an investigation into “unlawful enrichment” after reports surfaced of her wearing Rolex watches since taking office.
The raid, which occurred during Holy Week celebrations, shocked many in a country familiar with politicians facing corruption allegations. Police used force to enter Ms. Boluarte’s home in Lima before midnight on Good Friday and proceeded to search her office and residence in the presidential palace.
President Boluarte failed to meet with prosecutors to show them the Rolex watches she owns and explain their origin. She also denied them entry into her house to execute a search warrant, leading Attorney General Juan Villena to describe her actions as “a clear indicator of rebellion.”
The investigation into Ms. Boluarte began on March 18 after reports emerged that she had started wearing expensive watches, including Rolexes, since assuming office in December 2022. Prosecutors suspect her of violating laws against unlawful enrichment and failing to disclose assets. Elected officials in Peru are required to report assets exceeding 10,300 soles ($2,774) and gifts received.
Local news outlets reported that Ms. Boluarte wore multiple Rolexes, a Cartier bracelet, and received significant deposits in her personal accounts before taking office. The Rolex models she wore are valued at least $14,000 each.
Ms. Boluarte denied any wrongdoing but did not publicly explain the source of the watches, stating only that the first Rolex was “from long ago” and that she is not corrupt. She called on Peruvians to defend democracy amid the controversy.
Surrogates of Ms. Boluarte offered alternative explanations, suggesting the Rolex could be fake or received as gifts from an anonymous fan. The Justice Minister criticized the raids as unconstitutional and appealed for unity against attempts to destabilize the government.
Political observers fear the scandal could lead to further political turmoil in Peru, a country that has seen frequent changes in leadership. Ms. Boluarte’s popularity is low, and her decision to replace the impeached President Castillo sparked violent protests.
