‘They are coming because they are persecuted’: UN special rapporteur calls on UK to open up to more Afghan refugees

The United Nations special rapporteur for Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, has urged Britain to show more compassion towards Afghan refugees fleeing the Taliban’s oppressive regime. Despite the UK’s pledge to accept 20,000 refugees over five years, by December 2024, it had already received 34,940 arrivals and provided accommodation to nearly 26,000. Many vulnerable Afghans have turned to risky methods like crossing the Channel to reach the UK, often facing separation from their families and further mental anguish.
