In a significant milestone, the General Medical Council (GMC) reports that there are now more female doctors than male doctors in the UK for the first time, with women making up 50.04% of the register. The rise in female doctors has been attributed to the increasing number of women joining medical schools since 2018/19, with specialties such as obstetrics and gynaecology and paediatrics having the most women doctors. Despite this progress, challenges such as workplace discrimination and the need for supportive and inclusive environments still remain for female doctors, highlighting the importance of retaining and promoting gender diversity in the medical profession.
