A committee set up by the defence ministry in India has recommended the production of medium, multirole fighter jets to enhance the capability of the air force, with the Indian Air Force (IAF) requiring 114 multirole fighter aircraft to maintain combat edge. The IAF’s combat squadron levels have decreased due to retiring Soviet legacy aircraft, prompting the need for replacements under the C 295 model. This recommendation is likely to trigger a major competition among foreign original equipment manufacturers like Boeing and Lockheed Martin to produce the jets in India, valued at tens of billions of dollars.
