After tourist death on Malaysia’s Mount Kinabalu, guides urge ‘senior-friendly’ tours

Tour operators leading treks to Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia are considering offering low-risk “adventure” packages for older tourists instead of implementing an age limit, following the recent death of a British national in his 70s. Sabah Tourism Minister Christina Liew mentioned the possibility of age restrictions after a series of fatalities on the peak in the past year, with the latest incident occurring on February 25. Tourist guides suggest providing senior-friendly activities such as scenic hikes, jungle walks, and river cruises as alternatives to climbing the challenging summit, catering to the preferences and capabilities of older travellers while maintaining adventure opportunities.
