Ely, who has suffered from depression since the death of another elephant in 2016, has been the focus of advocates fighting for animal rights in Mexico. While improvements have been made to Ely’s living conditions, activists continue to push for her and two other elephants to be relocated to a sanctuary in Brazil or the United States, believing that elephants cannot thrive in captivity.
