UK politics live: Labour deny Trump is reason for Starmer’s defence spending boost

Defence secretary John Healey has stated that the 2.5 per cent increase in UK defence spending is not solely due to Donald Trump’s demands, as the commitment was made in Labour’s manifesto last year. Sir Keir Starmer plans to boost defence spending by 2027 with a goal of reaching 3 per cent by the early 2030s, a move influenced by Trump’s criticism of Ukraine. European countries like France and Germany are also considering increasing defence spending, with Sir Keir traveling to Washington to reassure Trump that Europe has a plan for Ukraine.
