Congo's president says he'll create a unity government as violence spreads

President Felix Tshisekedi of Congo announced plans to form a unity government in response to escalating violence in the country’s east, where Rwandan-backed rebels have seized major cities and caused thousands of deaths. The M23 rebels, supported by Rwandan troops, have taken control of Goma and Bukavu, with fears of advancing towards Kinshasa. Accusations of Congo enlisting Hutu fighters and M23’s claims of protecting Tutsis and Rwandans in Congo have raised concerns, while Tshisekedi has vowed to strengthen the army in the face of the crisis.
