Frankétienne, considered one of Haiti's most important and prolific writers, dies at 88

Renowned Haitian writer, painter, actor, and musician Frankétienne, known as the “father of Haitian letters,” has passed away at 88 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A key figure in Haitian literature, he founded spiralism and wrote the first modern novel in Haitian Creole, “Dézafi.” Frankétienne was also a prolific painter, serving as Haiti’s culture minister and receiving France’s Order of Arts and Letters for his contributions to art and culture.
