In response to the murders of Raneem Oudeh and her mother Khaola Saleem by Janbaz Tarin in 2018, the “Raneem’s Law” pilot program will embed domestic abuse specialists in the 999 control rooms of five police forces – West Midlands, Northumbria, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, and Humberside – with £2.2m in funding. The specialists will provide support for victims of domestic abuse by reviewing incoming calls, offering advice to responding officers, facilitating training sessions, and ensuring referrals to support services, aiming to prevent future tragedies and improve emergency responses to domestic abuse nationwide. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and campaigner Nour Norris emphasize the importance of this initiative in saving lives and creating a safer future for victims of domestic violence.
