Poet laureate Simon Armitage has welcomed the government’s £5m investment in the National Poetry Centre in Leeds, part of a £20m project to establish the UK’s first national cultural centre for poetry. The centre, to be housed in Trinity St David’s church, will feature a performance theatre, bookshop, library, cafe, recording facilities, and more, providing a dedicated space for the nation’s poetic heritage. Armitage praises the initiative, stating that poetry is a vital means of expression for people of all backgrounds and that Leeds is an ideal location for this national and international hub.
