USMNT's Sands out indefinitely with ankle break

New York City FC and USMNT midfielder James Sands underwent surgery for a significant right ankle injury, including a fractured fibula and torn MCL, after falling in a match for Bundesliga side St. Pauli. Sands, 24, was on loan to St. Pauli and had hopes of playing in the 2026 World Cup, but is now out indefinitely following the surgery in Germany. Sands, who has played 120 matches with NYCFC since 2017 and has 13 caps with the USMNT, expressed gratitude for his time in New York and his upcoming move back to Europe.
