UK's Starmer tells hunger-striking mum he will press Egypt to release her son

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to press the Egyptian government for the release of Laila Soueif’s son, Alaa Abd el-Fattah, a British-Egyptian dual national who has been imprisoned for over five years on charges of “spreading false news” on social media. Soueif, who has been on a hunger strike for 140 days, has lost 55 pounds and has been camping outside government offices to draw attention to her son’s plight. Abd el-Fattah, a prominent pro-democracy activist, was sentenced to five years in prison for “liking” a Facebook post criticizing Egyptian prisons, with thousands of critics of President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi facing similar unjust imprisonment.
