Congo says Rwanda-backed rebels occupy a 2nd major city in its mineral-rich east

Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have taken control of Bukavu, the second-largest city in eastern Congo, and the South Kivu province administrative office, with little resistance from government forces. The rebels, supported by troops from Rwanda, are vying for control of mineral-rich eastern Congo, displacing millions and creating a humanitarian crisis. The rebels, led by Bernard Maheshe Byamungu, have vowed to “clean up” disorder and are eyeing political power, sparking fears of regional escalation and prompting international concern.
