Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in eastern Congo have reportedly taken control of the Kavumu airport in South Kivu province, following their advance towards the strategic spot in the region. The rebels had previously seized Goma, including the international airport, escalating the conflict with Congolese forces. The rebellion, involving over 100 armed groups, has resulted in the deaths of at least 2,000 people and displacement of hundreds of thousands in the mineral-rich east of Congo.
