Parents could save up to £540 a year by switching from premium baby milk formula to a basic brand, as recommended by the Competition & Markets Authority. Lower-priced formulas have the same nutritional value as more expensive options, and standardised packaging in hospitals and the ability to buy baby milk in supermarkets using loyalty points and vouchers are also suggested. The CMA found that the difference in prices over the first year of a baby’s life can have a significant financial impact on parents, and restrictions on price promotions and advertising should be extended to include follow-on formula.
