MP behind assisted dying bill suggests scrapping High Court approval
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The MP behind the assisted dying bill is suggesting scrapping the High Court approval process in favor of a panel of experts to oversee applications. This change is intended to address concerns about the court’s capacity to handle each case. The panel would be chaired by a senior legal figure and include experts such as psychiatrists and social workers. The decision could be reviewed by the High Court if necessary. The proposal will be voted on by a committee of MPs, with various amendments being tabled, including one to allow those with neurodegenerative illnesses to access assisted dying with 12 months to live. Some opponents are concerned about potential loss of safeguards with these changes. Leadbeater maintains that the bill already contains strong safeguards and the proposed changes will further enhance the system.
