Saudi doctoral student Salma al-Shehab, sentenced to 34 years in prison in 2022 for her Twitter activity in Saudi Arabia, has had her sentence drastically reduced to four years, with an additional four years suspended. A London-based rights group announced her release, calling for her full freedom to be granted, including the right to travel to complete her studies. Al-Shehab, a Shiite Muslim minority member, was detained in January 2021 for following and retweeting dissident accounts on Twitter, accused of disturbing public order and destabilizing the social fabric solely based on her social media activity.
