Up to 10 million people in the UK may have obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), a condition where the throat walls relax and narrow during sleep, leading to interrupted breathing and daytime tiredness. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale questionnaire can help determine the severity of sleepiness, with a score of 11 or above suggesting a need to consult a GP. Further tests at a sleep clinic may be necessary to diagnose conditions like sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, or restless legs syndrome if excessive daytime sleepiness persists.
