UN rights body condemns Rwanda and the rebels it backs in neighboring Congo. Violence mounts in east

The U.N. Human Rights Council condemned Rwanda’s support of rebel fighters in eastern Congo, leading to civilian casualties and displacement, and ordered a team of experts to investigate rights violations in the region. The resolution called for the rebels and Rwandan forces to cease human rights violations, allow humanitarian aid access, and created a commission of inquiry to report back to the council. The violence has resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries, with the U.N. urging rebels to lay down their weapons and seek mediation to end the crisis.
