Laila Soueif, a mathematician, university professor, and political activist, is on a hunger strike outside the British prime minister’s office to demand the release of her son, Alaa Abd el-Fattah, who has been unjustly imprisoned in Egypt for more than five years. Abd el-Fattah, a pro-democracy activist, was sentenced to five years in prison for “liking” a Facebook post about torture in Egyptian prisons and continues to be detained despite international pressure.
