U.S. economy added just 143,000 jobs in January but unemployment rate fell to 4%

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that job creation in January fell short of expectations, with nonfarm payrolls increasing by 143,000, down from 307,000 in December. Despite this, worker wages saw a sharp rise. The unemployment rate dipped to 4%, and significant revisions to 2024 totals showed downward changes to previous payrolls levels but upward revisions to the number of employed individuals.
