The second day of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament concluded with more excitement and upsets, setting the stage for the Round of 32. Here are some key takeaways from Friday’s action.

1. SEC teams struggled in the first round, with only three out of eight advancing. No. 4-seeded Auburn’s loss to No. 13 Yale highlighted the conference’s disappointing performance, leading to questions about the SEC’s strength in the tournament.

2. No. 8 Florida Atlantic’s late-game indecision cost them in an overtime loss to No. 9 Northwestern. The decision not to use a timeout and a rushed three-pointer led to FAU’s elimination from the tournament.

3. The Pac-12 conference had a strong showing in the first round, going undefeated with four teams advancing to the Round of 32. Upsets by No. 10 Colorado and No. 7 Washington State showcased the conference’s depth.

4. Clemson’s win over New Mexico prevented a historic moment in NCAA Tournament history, as it avoided all No. 11 seeds advancing to the second round. Clemson’s victory sets up a tough matchup with No. 3 Baylor in the next round.

5. San Diego State continues to be the standout team from the Mountain West conference, advancing to the second round with a win over No. 12 UAB. Despite a record six teams from the conference qualifying for the tournament, San Diego State remains the most successful team.
