The disconnection symbolizes the end of ties to the former Soviet Union and signifies a shift towards closer ties with the European Union. The Baltic Power System will operate independently for 24 hours before merging with the Continental European and Nordic grids through connections with Finland, Sweden, and Poland. The Kaliningrad region, a Russian exclave, already operates on its own power generation. Both the Baltic countries and Russia have taken preparatory steps to ensure a smooth transition.
