Ecuador's conservative president announces tariffs on Mexican exports in an echo of Trump policy

Ecuador’s conservative President Daniel Noboa announced a 27% tariff on Mexican imports in a move seen as aligning with US President Donald Trump’s trade policies, aimed at boosting local manufacturers and potentially gaining favor with Washington amid ongoing diplomatic tensions with Mexico. Trump recently paused his own tariffs on Mexico to allow for further negotiations regarding illegal immigration and drug smuggling, while trade between Ecuador and Mexico is minimal, accounting for less than 1% of Mexico’s total exports. Noboa, who took office 18 months ago to finish the term of a former president, is currently running for his first complete constitutional term in upcoming elections.
