South Korean appeals court upholds acquittal of Samsung chief Lee

The Seoul High Court upheld the acquittal of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong in a financial criminal case related to a merger between Samsung affiliates that solidified his control over the company. Lee’s lawyer welcomed the ruling, allowing Lee to focus on his company, with prosecutors having the option to appeal to the Supreme Court. Lee previously served time in prison for separate bribery charges related to the 2015 merger, which was controversial due to allegations of benefiting the Lee family at the expense of minority shareholders.
