Japan has decided to freeze voluntary funding for a UN women’s rights panel after it called for an end to the country’s male-only imperial succession rule, prompting Japan to exclude itself from receiving annual contributions and suspend a planned visit by committee members. The government believes that the male-only succession rule does not violate basic rights of women and is not discriminatory, despite pressure to allow a female emperor. As Japan’s imperial family faces a decline in members, the government is exploring alternatives to maintain stability without resorting to female succession, such as adopting new male members from former noble families.
