News for Trump: Denmark's last envoy to Greenland says U.K. may have first dibs

An expert on Greenland’s history, Tom Høyem, suggests that if President Trump tries to buy or annex Greenland, Britain could have a competing claim based on a 1917 treaty between the U.S. and Denmark. The treaty recognized Danish sovereignty over Greenland in exchange for the U.S. purchasing the U.S. Virgin Islands. Høyem believes that the British government’s support for the treaty was contingent upon having the first right to buy or be consulted on Greenland’s future due to its proximity to Canada. NPR has requested copies of any declassified diplomatic cables that might support Høyem’s account.
