At Auschwitz, a Solemn Ceremony at a Time of Rising Nationalism

Dozens of world leaders, including Britain’s king and the president of Ukraine, gathered in Auschwitz to mark the 80th anniversary of its liberation, expressing concern over the resurgence of nationalism and antisemitism in Europe. Survivors and dignitaries laid candles at a railway car symbolizing the Holocaust victims, warning of the dangers of forgetting the past and the rise of extremism. With a dwindling number of survivors, the importance of commemorating the Holocaust and combating hate speech and discrimination was emphasized by speakers at the event.
