The Police Ombudsman found that a PSNI officer did not act with sensitivity during a Troubles memorial event on the Ormeau Road in 2021, where survivor Mark Sykes was arrested and put into handcuffs before being released 90 minutes later. The officer’s actions were deemed to be not in line with the order to treat the gathering with sensitivity, despite reasonable justification for police attendance due to Covid restrictions. PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher has accepted the ombudsman’s recommendations in response to the investigation.
