Arrest warrant proposed for Taliban leaders for gender-based crimes

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is seeking arrest warrants for Taliban Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada and Chief Justice Abdul Hakim Haqqani for their role in gender-based crimes against Afghan girls and women since the Taliban took power in 2021. The Taliban has imposed numerous restrictions on women’s rights, leading to over 100 decrees limiting education, employment, public participation, and more. While the Taliban has denounced the warrants, human rights groups and activists have welcomed the move as a step towards accountability and justice for women and girls in Afghanistan. However, some remain cautious about the outcome of the arrest warrants and fear potential backlash from the Taliban.
