In March 2020, two men communicate through a makeshift barricade wall in Wuhan, China, during the COVID-19 lockdown. Fang Fang, an author, documented life in the closed city during the lockdown, which was initially praised but later censored by authorities. Her writings were later published as “Wuhan Diary: Dispatches from a Quarantined City” by UCLA Professor Michael Berry. This was not the first time Fang Fang faced backlash for her writing, as her novel “Soft Burial” was blacklisted after winning an award in China for historical realism.
