Ministers are planning to launch digital driving licences through a new government app, potentially by the end of this year, with optional use and secure access similar to banking apps. The digital wallet will only be accessible by the licence holder, utilizing smartphone security features. The photocard driving licence, introduced in 1998, no longer requires a paper counterpart as of 2015.
