Former college basketball coach and ESPN analyst Tom Crean expressed his disapproval of several teams, including St. John’s, choosing not to participate in this year’s NIT. Crean criticized the idea of teams turning down the opportunity to play in college basketball’s other main postseason tournament during ESPN’s “NIT Selection Special” show.
St. John’s publicly announced their decision to decline an invite to the NIT after not receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Rick Pitino stated, “After thorough consideration of all that goes into postseason participation, we believe at this time it is best for our team and basketball program to prepare for next season.”
Crean dismissed the notion that the opening of the transfer portal played a significant role in teams opting out of the NIT. He emphasized the importance of coaching, developing players, and providing opportunities for them to compete and improve.
Other notable teams such as Syracuse, Pitt, Memphis, and Ole Miss also opted not to participate in the NIT. The first round of the tournament is set to begin on March 19.
