Rescuers sent a cage-like structure down into one of South Africa’s deepest gold mines to bring out survivors among hundreds of illegal miners trapped for months, with more than 100 believed dead. Civic organizations report at least 24 bodies and 34 survivors rescued, but over 500 miners are still underground, many ill and starving. Rights groups criticize police tactics and say miners are unable to climb out due to starvation and the removal of ropes and pulley systems.
