Sub-Saharan African countries lost $1.56 billion to government-induced shutdowns in 2024, with Nigeria being one of the few countries to avoid such restrictions. Sudan suffered the most significant loss of $1.12 billion due to prolonged conflicts, while Kenya and Ethiopia shut down the internet during protests, affecting millions of users. Despite a global decrease in economic impact, the duration of shutdowns increased, raising concerns about citizens resorting to unsafe VPNs to bypass restrictions.
