The U.S. Ambassador to Israel Jacob J. Lew stated in an interview with NPR that the U.S. is seeking the release of all seven American hostages held in Gaza in negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas. Hamas has named only two U.S. citizens in a group of 34 hostages it said it would free. Lew called the failure to free all the hostages the biggest failure of U.S. diplomacy in the war. He also confirmed negotiations for the release of a prominent American hostage who was killed by his captors in Gaza last August. Lew expressed frustration with Israel’s characterization of U.S. involvement in the conflict, particularly regarding a pause in munitions shipments.
