Over 1.7 million people were displaced, with an estimated $10 billion in economic losses, and a heavy toll on children. In response, global collaboration led to the establishment of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System, but challenges from climate change continue to threaten vulnerable coastal communities, emphasizing the ongoing need for awareness and preparedness.
