Nearly half of New Zealanders prefer the new Interislander ferries to be rail-enabled, according to a recent poll by Horizon Research. The government is exploring replacement options after abandoning the costly iRex project, with 48% of respondents favoring rail-enabled ferries. While ownership preferences vary, the government plans to establish a company to procure two new vessels, with decisions expected in March.
