A UN committee found that Australia violated a human rights treaty by detaining asylum seekers, including minors, on Nauru after they were granted refugee status. The committee cited violations of provisions on arbitrary detention and right to challenge detention in court, asking for compensation for victims and prevention of future violations. Another case involved an Iranian refugee in Nauru facing arbitrary detention. Australia argued jurisdiction, but the committee deemed Nauru within its responsibility due to construction and financing involvement.
