Panama marks Martyrs' Day amid Trump threats to retake control of Panama Canal

Panama City commemorates Martyrs’ Day, remembering the 1964 killing of 21 protesters by police and U.S. troops during a Panamanian national holiday. The protests led to the signing of an agreement by U.S. President Jimmy Carter to transfer control of the Panama Canal to Panama in 1999. Despite President-elect Trump’s threats to seize control of the canal, Panama President José Raúl Mulino and the niece of a victim have vowed to defend Panama’s ownership.
