The Chrome Web Store is facing a new challenge as rogue developers manipulate the search system to promote malicious extensions in unrelated contexts, exploiting translation loopholes and keyword stuffing to increase visibility and downloads. Security researcher Wladimir Palant discovered 920 extensions engaging in these deceptive practices, leading to concerns about Google’s response to the issue despite previous alerts. The manipulation tactics hint at a coordinated effort by a small group of developers, raising questions about the effectiveness of the Chrome Web Store’s policies and enforcement.
