A deadly earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck western China, killing 126 people near Nepal and ranking as one of the country’s deadliest in recent years. The seismic activity in China is most common on the Tibetan Plateau, where the clash of the India and Eurasia plates can cause significant uplifts, leading to devastating earthquakes. Previous major earthquakes in China include the 2008 Sichuan earthquake that killed nearly 90,000 people, as well as deadly quakes in Yunnan, Qinghai, and Gansu provinces in subsequent years.
