Myanmar to release prisoners to mark Independence Day

Myanmar’s military government announced a mass amnesty on the country’s 77th Independence Day, releasing more than 6,000 prisoners and reducing sentences for others, including political detainees. Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing granted amnesties covering 5,864 prisoners and commuted life sentences for 144 prisoners, but it remains unclear if any political detainees will be among those released. The terms of release warn that freed detainees will have to serve the remainder of their original sentences if they violate the law again.
