Suspected people smugglers face phone and travel ban

Suspected people smugglers in Britain will face travel bans, social media blackouts, and phone restrictions under new laws, with interim Serious Crime Prevention Orders (SCPOs) to be introduced to curb their activities. The measures come as the number of migrants arriving by small boats in the English Channel rose by a quarter in 2024. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper aims to tackle criminal gang networks profiting from border insecurity, while critics like shadow home secretary Chris Philp question the effectiveness of the measures and call for reinstating the scrapped Rwanda scheme.
