Turkey’s pro-Kurd party to meet jailed PKK leader on Saturday

A delegation from Turkey’s pro-Kurdish DEM party is set to visit jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan on a prison island off Istanbul, marking the party’s first visit in nearly a decade. The visit was approved by the government following an appeal by President Erdogan’s nationalist ally, Devlet Bahceli, for Ocalan to renounce “terror”. Ocalan, who founded the PKK, has been in solitary confinement since 1999 and his rare visit comes amid efforts to address the Kurdish issue in Turkey.
