Thousands of animals, including pigs, rabbits, monkeys, guinea pigs, and mice, have been killed in ‘barbaric’ experiments at the secretive Porton Down research base in Wiltshire over the last three years, sparking outrage from animal rights campaigners. The Ministry of Defence defended the tests as necessary for ‘life-saving’ research to protect British troops, despite criticism from Dr Julia Baines of Peta for the ‘appallingly cruel experiments’ on animals. The experiments involved injecting deadly viruses into brains, exposing animals to nerve agents, and replicating battlefield trauma, with the number of animal procedures trending upwards each year, including 1,797 mice, 83 pigs, and 97 marmosets killed in experiments between 2021 and 2023.
