Luca Nardi, a 20-year-old Italian, caused a major upset by defeating Novak Djokovic at the Indian Wells tournament. Ranked 123rd in the world, Nardi entered the tournament as a lucky loser after Tomas Martin Etcheverry’s withdrawal and managed to beat the world number one Djokovic in three sets. In the next round, Nardi will face American Tommy Paul while Djokovic looks to bounce back at the Miami Open.

After a five-year absence from Indian Wells, Djokovic’s return was cut short by Nardi’s surprising victory. The young Italian played aggressively, while Djokovic admitted to a poor performance.

\”These two things come together. He’s having a great day, I’m having a really bad day,\” Djokovic stated.

Despite Djokovic’s errors, Nardi’s excellent play led to his victory over the tennis legend. Nardi expressed his disbelief at beating Djokovic, calling it a “miracle.”

\”I’m a 20-year-old guy, 100 in the world, and beating Novak. So, crazy. Crazy,\” Nardi said.

Nardi’s win not hindered by Djokovic

Nardi frustrated Djokovic with his powerful shots throughout the match. Djokovic questioned a call that led to a disputed point, but the umpire clarified that Nardi’s actions did not constitute a hindrance.

Nardi, a lucky loser, replaced an injured player and went on to defeat Djokovic, becoming the lowest-ranked player to beat him in a Grand Slam or ATP Masters 1000 event. Djokovic now looks ahead to the Miami Open in search of his first title of the year.
