A portion of the Santa Cruz Wharf in northern California collapsed into the Pacific Ocean, causing three city workers to fall into the sea after high surf hit the coast. The workers were rescued, and the damaged section of the pier, closed to the public due to previous storm damage, was being torn down by construction crews when the collapse occurred. The area has been evacuated, closed to emergency responders, and warned to stay away due to hazardous conditions caused by dangerously large breaking waves, with a high surf warning in effect until Tuesday evening.
