The Vatican has taken the first step towards beatifying Belgium’s late King Baudouin, who abdicated for a day rather than approve legislation to legalize abortion, establishing a historical commission to investigate his life and virtues. Pope Francis’ strong comments denouncing Belgium’s abortion laws as “homicidal” during his visit to Brussels sparked controversy, with Prime Minister De Croo calling them “totally unacceptable.” The saint-making process typically takes years, but Francis seems to be expediting Baudouin’s cause by overseeing the investigation closely through the Vatican’s involvement.
